Sheila G. Evani
Sheila assists private businesses, individuals, non-profits, and social ventures in making pragmatic legal decisions that align with their personal and organizational values. Sheila acts as general counsel to small and medium-sized businesses in various stages of their development. She advises on a wide variety of their legal needs ranging from organizing and structuring a business or venture, contract preparation and negotiation, and buying and selling businesses. In working with businesses in their various transactions, Sheila focuses on balancing risk and liability management, with effective tax-planning.
Estate Planning and Wealth Preservation
Sheila has experience in forward planning and works with private clients on their legacy planning. Sheila advises on the preparation of wills, asset and estate planning, estate administration matters, powers of attorney, representation agreements, trusts, applications for probate, and tax-planned charitable giving. Sheila also works with family-owned businesses and recognizes their unique considerations involving succession planning and transition to future generations.
Real Estate and Secured Lending Transactions
Sheila acts for both residential and commercial developers, as well as for individuals purchasing their own home. She advises on lending and secured transactions, commercial agreements and leases, strata and subdivision projects, and co-housing developments. She also acts for financial institutions and private lenders in the preparation and registration of loan and security documents.
Non-Profits, Charities, and Social Ventures
Sheila is passionate about social change and supports community social and economic development through her work with non-profits, foundations, tax-exempt entities, and registered charities of various sizes. With her tax knowledge, she is able to assist tax-exempt organizations in navigating the complex CRA requirements for maintaining their exemption. Sheila also works with social enterprises and community contribution companies to provide appropriate legal foundation and structure to their business activities, while advancing their social mandates.
On a Personal Note…
Sheila has a BA in Communications from Simon Fraser University, and her LLB from the University of Alberta in 2004. Having grown up in the Fraser Valley, she now lives in Vancouver with her husband and her beloved pug Basil. When she’s not working, Sheila indulges her love for music, yoga, literature, and world travel. She is a violinist with the West Coast Symphony Orchestra, and volunteers with the Beauty Night Society, an organization aimed at improving the lives of women and youth living in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
